Overview

The Pocket Monitor is a software program for display, recording and playback of physiologic sounds. The software is installed on a PDA (personal digital assistant) for ease of use at the bedside. This PDA can also be used as a cell phone to minimize the items that need to be carried. The Pocket Monitor will display a phonocardiogram while simultaneously listening. It also records and plays back heart, breath, Korotkoff or bowel sounds during routine patient rounds or in the office. The Pocket Monitor is designed to be used with the E-Scope electronic stethoscope.

The E-Scope and Pocket Monitor provide a portable, effective, low cost means to display, record, playback heart and lung sounds. The Pocket Monitor not only provides the physician with auscultation, but with additional clinical information as well. The E-Scope/Pocket Monitor offers the following unique benefits:

• Provides an objective record as a complement to the subjective information from auscultation; particularly in identification of heart sounds and murmurs and lung sounds such as pneumonia, asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).


• Offers mobile, convenient and user-friendly testing for both patient and practitioner.
  
• Heart and lung sound waveforms can be visually reviewed, recorded and playback back at will.


• Sounds can be recorded and shared by email.


• Sounds can be transferred to the CardioSim Digital Heart Sound Simulator for teaching purposes or to a standard PC for storage, if desired.


• The PDA can be used as a cellular telephone with an optional expansion pack


• Optional software is available and can be factory installed. Examples of such software are the CD-ROMS Learning Cardiac Auscultation and Learning Lung Sounds from Cardionics. Other optional software includes the AHA Five-Minute Cardiac Consult, A to Z Drug Handbook, & iFact Drug Interaction Facts. There are approximately 60 medical handbook titles available

Total weight of the PDA is about 14 oz. allowing it to be worn on a belt or carried in a pocket. The Pocket Monitor displays and/or records all heart, lung or bowel sounds captured during auscultation. The sounds then can be replayed while viewing the waveforms simultaneously.

The Pocket Monitor/E-Scope allows direct visual and simultaneous audible detection of the normal and abnormal sounds. For heart sounds, a phonocardiogram is displayed in real time and can be recorded at will. For lung sounds, not only can sounds be displayed, recorded and played back, each auscultation position can be examined for crackles, wheezes, and irregular patterns of inspiration and expiration. Although the Pocket Monitor will store up to 100 patients on the PDA, using Microsoft’s Activesync, (included with each Compaq Ipaq), the patient’s heart or lung sounds can be uploaded to a PC for permanent storage or comparison with prior recordings
